Setting up Google 2-Step Verification

Objective

This document outlines the step-by-step procedure to secure a Google account by enabling 2-Step Verification (2SV). This adds an essential layer of security to prevent unauthorized access.

Prerequisites

  • Access to the Google account credentials (email and password).

  • A mobile device capable of receiving text messages, phone calls, or Google prompts.

  • A reliable internet connection.

Procedure

  1. Open Google Account Settings:
Navigate to myaccount.google.com in a web browser. Log in using the email address and password of the account you intend to secure.

  2. Navigate to Security:
On the left-hand navigation panel, click on Security & Sign-in. Note: On mobile devices, this option is located in a scrollable menu bar near the top of the screen.

  3. Start 2-Step Verification Setup:
Scroll down to the "How you sign in to Google" section. Click on 2-Step Verification. On the subsequent page, click the Get Started button. You will be required to re-enter your account password to verify your identity.

  4. Select Your Primary Second Step:
Google defaults to suggesting a "Google prompt" for smartphones currently signed into the account. If an alternative method is required (such as SMS text message, voice call, or a physical security key), click Show more options and make the appropriate selection.

  5. Verify Your Backup Option:
If utilizing Google prompts or an authenticator app as the primary method, a backup phone number is mandatory. Enter a valid phone number and select the preferred delivery method for backup codes (text message or phone call). Input the 6-digit verification code received to confirm the number.

  6. Turn On 2-Step Verification:
Review the configured settings on the final confirmation screen. Click the Turn On button to activate 2-Step Verification for the account.
